How Strong Am I and Does it Really Matter?

Yes, these are all my 2021 numbers at 41 years old

  • Max Hip Thrust 465lbs
  • Max Back Squat: 415lbs; 5-Rep Max 330lbs (385lbs in 2022)
  • Max Deadlift: 375lbs (405lbs in 2022)
  • Max Sumo Deadlift: 415lbs (2022)
  • Max Bench Press: 315lbs
  • Max Split Jerk: 245 lbs
  • Max Push Press: 235 lbs
  • Max Clean: 255lbs
  • Max Snatch: 175 lbs

Should It Matter to You?

Yes — to a point. My big three lifts (squat, bench, and deadlift) put me at 1,117 pounds. Strength is useful proof of concept. Genetics also matter, just as they do for running speed. A strong coach is worth considering; coaching skill, teaching, and programming matter more than how much weight sits on a barbell.

Experience and Certifications Matter Most

If you want a strong coach in your area, look at years on the floor and the depth of individual credentials. I have hired and trained over 200 coaches for Sand & Steel. Coaches with more experience and more certifications consistently deliver better sessions. Physique helps a photo; what helps you is a coach who can see your movement, scale the work, and keep you progressing.
