Book Your Fitness Assessment

The Fitness Assessment is a single, 1-on-1 session with a senior coach. You can purchase it as a standalone session or get it included in our Personal Training Starter Pack.
Most Northern Virginia clients who complete an assessment see better results, fewer injuries, and more consistent progress in both Personal Training and CrossFit.

After purchase, you’ll receive an email with instructions to schedule your session. You can also view availability on our schedule page.

What the Fitness Assessment Measures

Before we can design an effective program for you, we need objective data on how you move. Your Fitness Assessment looks at five key areas that affect performance, injury risk, and recovery:

  • Biomechanics & Muscle Function: How your joints track, how your muscles fire, and whether you can maintain good positions under load.
  • Cellular Energy Generation & Conditioning: How well you tolerate work in different energy systems (short, intense efforts vs. sustained efforts).
  • Fitness Capacity: Your current strength, endurance, and work capacity relative to your goals.
  • Mobility & Flexibility: Joint range of motion and tissue quality that may limit specific lifts, running, or CrossFit movements.
  • Functional Exercise Patterns: How you squat, hinge, press, pull, lunge, and brace when we put real-world movements together.

This is not a “pass/fail” test. It is a map. The goal is to find the fastest, safest way to get you from where you are now to where you want to be—whether that is weight loss, better strength, pain-free running, or passing a high-stakes fitness test.

Types of Fitness Assessments We Offer

During booking, you’ll choose the type of assessment that best matches your goals. Most people select the Comprehensive Assessment, but we also offer specialized options for CrossFit, running, seniors, and official fitness tests.

1. Comprehensive Assessment (Recommended for Most Clients)

This is our flagship diagnostic session and the most complete option for new members. We integrate tests from multiple evidence-based systems—including FMS, Y-Balance, Gray Institute 3DMAPS, Functional Range Conditioning (FRC), Kinstretch, and foundational strength and conditioning principles—to assess your body across all major movement patterns.

Your coach evaluates mobility, joint control, strength balance, conditioning tolerance, and functional mechanics through a curated set of 8–12 exercises tailored to your level. Tests are scaled for beginners, experienced lifters, CrossFit athletes, and older adults. We may assess:

  • Squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, and carry mechanics

  • Hip, ankle, shoulder, and thoracic spine mobility

  • Core bracing and rotational control

  • Single-leg stability and balance

  • Short conditioning intervals to understand energy system tolerance

  • How posture, joint sequencing, and tissue quality affect movement

The goal is not to “pass or fail.” It’s to determine which areas will yield the biggest improvements in performance, safety, and longevity. This assessment provides the foundation for scaling CrossFit, selecting the best Personal Training program, reducing injury risk, and ensuring your training matches what your body actually needs.

Choose this option if you want the broadest, most complete analysis of your current capacity and movement health.

2. Mobility & Control Assessment

(For tightness, restricted positions, or movement limitations)

This session analyzes why certain lifts or positions feel restricted. Using FRC, Kinstretch, 3DMAPS, FMS, Y-Balance, and MWOD ReadyState methodologies, we examine joint mobility, stability, and motor control at the hips, ankles, shoulders, and thoracic spine.

We test how you organize movement under light load or TRX-assisted patterns to determine whether limitations come from mobility, joint mechanics, or control. Ideal for improving overhead positions, squat depth, front rack mobility, or general stiffness.

This assessment is ideal if you feel stiff in key lifts, struggle with overhead work or deep squats, or want mobility programming that’s more precise than generic stretching. You’ll leave with targeted drills drawn from FRC, Kinstretch, and 3D movement principles—plus a clear plan to restore joint function and control that mobility safely under load. It also pairs especially well with our Rehab Training mobility sessions.

3. CrossFit Readiness Assessment

(For people preparing to enter CrossFit safely and confidently)

This evaluation identifies whether you’re technically and physically ready for CrossFit classes. Using your coach’s CrossFit Level 3 (CF-L3) expertise plus certifications in CrossFit Gymnastics, CrossFit Weightlifting, CrossFit Powerlifting, Catalyst Athletics, Starting Strength, TRX, FRC/Kinstretch, FMS, and Y-Balance, we assess the key CrossFit patterns.

We check squat/hinge mechanics, overhead mobility, front rack positions, pulling strength, kipping prerequisites, Olympic lifting foundations, and interval tolerance. You’ll receive clear guidance on which movements to scale, what to prioritize, and whether a short period of Personal Training would accelerate progress.

Your coach will determine how to scale movements, which CrossFit track is appropriate, and whether you should start in Personal Training first. This is ideal for people who want the community and intensity of CrossFit but don’t want to guess whether their body is ready.

4. FMS & Y-Balance Test (FMS/YBT)

(For asymmetries, imbalances, or recurring injuries)

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and Y-Balance Test (YBT) are standardized tools for detecting asymmetries and movement limitations that increase injury risk. Your coach scores key patterns like deep squat, lunge, shoulder mobility, core stability, and single-leg balance, and compares your reach and control side-to-side.

This is a great choice if you’ve had recurring injuries, feel “off” on one side, or want objective data to guide a focused corrective program. You’ll leave with a prioritized list of mobility and stability drills to address the root causes of your issues.

5. Running Assessment

(For recreational and competitive runners)

Combining RRCA running coaching, CrossFit Pose Running, FRC, Kinstretch, 3DMAPS, FMS, and Y-Balance, we analyze your running mechanics to understand why certain paces or distances cause issues.

We evaluate cadence, posture, foot strike, hip/ankle mobility, single-leg stability, and form under light treadmill or indoor running conditions. This is ideal for runners experiencing shin, knee, or Achilles discomfort, or those preparing for races and want to avoid overtraining.

You’ll receive individualized technique corrections, mobility work, and strength priorities to improve efficiency and reduce strain.

6. Senior Assessment

(For adults 60–80+ focused on balance, mobility, and safe movement)

Built around your coach’s Functional Aging Specialist (FAI) training—plus 3DMAPS, FMS Level II, Y-Balance, FRC, Kinstretch, TRX, and Starting Strength—this assessment evaluates the essential movement skills needed for safe, independent living.

We look at balance, gait mechanics, grip strength, hip/ankle mobility, posture, single-leg stability, and confidence with squatting, stepping, lifting, and getting on/off the floor. All tests are gentle and scaled.

You’ll receive a clear plan to improve strength, mobility, fall-prevention skills, and overall confidence.

7. Fitness Test Specific (ACFT, FBI PFT, and More)

If you need to pass a formal fitness test, this assessment replicates the event demands and identifies which components need improvement. Using principles from CrossFit Level 3 (CCFT) programming, Catalyst Athletics barbell technique, Starting Strength foundational lifts, RRCA running mechanics, and mobility systems like FRC, Kinstretch, FMS, and Y-Balance, we test the exact movements and energy systems required for your exam.

We evaluate strength events (deadlift or power movements), anaerobic efforts (sprints, shuttle runs), aerobic capacity, core strength tests (planks, leg tucks), and movement quality for loaded carries or agility components. The session reveals your limiting factors—technique, mobility, strength, conditioning, pacing, or recovery.

You’ll leave with a clear training path tailored to your test: how to scale practice efforts, how often to retest, and which drills or lifts will improve your performance fastest. This assessment is the most direct way to prepare confidently for high-stakes exams like the ACFT or FBI PFT.

Why Invest in a Fitness Assessment If It’s Optional?

At Sand & Steel, the Fitness Assessment is not required to start training—but members who complete it consistently see better outcomes. They stay longer, progress faster, and experience fewer injuries compared to people who skip the assessment and jump straight into workouts.

  • Fewer injuries and flare-ups: We spot red flags before they turn into problems and adjust exercises accordingly.
  • Faster progress: Training is built around your specific strengths and limitations, not a generic template.
  • Smarter scaling for CrossFit: Your coach knows exactly how to scale WODs so you get intensity without wrecking your joints.
  • Better program selection: We can recommend the best fit among Personal Training, CrossFit, Rehab Training, and Beyond Stretch.
  • Objective re-testing: When you come back every few months, you’ll see measurable improvements—not just “vibes.”

If you are serious about getting stronger, losing weight, or passing a demanding fitness test, the assessment is a small one-time investment that makes every future session more productive.

Fitness Assessment FAQ

Is the Fitness Assessment required before I start training?

No. You can start Personal Training or CrossFit without an assessment. However, people who complete it generally see faster progress, more precise scaling, and fewer setbacks. It allows us to build a plan that fits your body instead of guessing based on experience alone.

Why should I spend an extra for the fitness assessment if it’s optional?

The assessment is a one-time investment that improves every session after it. We find issues early, reduce trial-and-error, and prioritize the drills and lifts that will move the needle the most. That typically means fewer wasted sessions, fewer injuries, and better long-term results.

How is this different from the Personal Training Starter Pack?

The Starter Pack includes multiple training sessions and is focused on coaching you through workouts while teaching our systems. The Fitness Assessment is a dedicated diagnostic session where we slow down, test, and analyze. You can buy the assessment on its own or get it bundled inside the Starter Pack.

Which assessment type should I choose?

If you’re unsure, choose the Comprehensive Assessment. It gives us the broadest picture and still allows us to emphasize areas like mobility, CrossFit readiness, or test-specific performance. The specialized options are best when you have a very clear primary goal, such as running, ACFT, or FBI PFT.

How long does the Fitness Assessment take?

Plan for about 45 minutes. The exact time depends on your goals, training age, and how many patterns we need to test. We won’t rush, but we also won’t waste time on tests that don’t apply to your goals.

Will I receive written results or just verbal feedback?

You’ll receive clear verbal feedback during the session and a summary of key findings and priorities. For more detailed or test-specific work (like FMS/YBT or ACFT), we may also use scoring sheets or written notes that you can reference as you train.

How often should I repeat the assessment?

Most people retest every 3 months to measure progress and update their training plan. If you are preparing for a specific test date or recovering from an injury, we may recommend a different timeline.

Can I do the assessment if I’m hurt or dealing with pain?

Yes. In fact, that’s one of the best reasons to schedule an assessment. We’ll work around your current limitations, avoid provocative positions, and use what we see to decide whether you should start with Rehab Training, Beyond Stretch, or standard Personal Training.

Is this only for advanced athletes?

No. We routinely assess beginners who haven’t worked out in years, experienced CrossFit athletes, military personnel, and seniors from Kingstowne, West End Alexandria, Arlington, and the broader Northern Virginia region. The tests are scaled to you.

What if I’m mainly interested in weight loss?

The assessment still helps. We’ll look at your current strength, conditioning, and movement quality to build a training plan that burns calories efficiently without beating up your joints. From there we can connect you with Nutrition Coaching for the nutrition side.
